Why Is Sun Protection Important?

We founded Good Instincts because we believe so strongly that everyone needs to be wearing sunscreen every day, and reapplying more than they (probably) do. But why is sunscreen so important? We might be biased, but we think daily sun protection is the single most impactful step you can take for both your long-term health and the appearance of your skin. The sun — while wonderful in so many ways! — emits invisible Ultraviolet (UV) radiation that causes deep, cellular damage, which accumulates over your lifetime. Here is a good shorthand for how you can think of the two main types of UV light:

UVB Rays

These are the “burning” rays that are primarily responsible for sunburns. They mostly damage the outer layers of the skin and play a significant role in causing most types of skin cancer.

UVA Rays

Think of these as the "aging" rays. They penetrate deeper into the skin, even through clouds and glass, and are present year-round. (So you’re not safe from them on cloudy or wintry days, or when you’re in your car or in an office by the window.) UVA rays are primarily responsible for premature aging signs such as lines and dark spots. (They are also a contributor to skin cancers.)

The Solution? Protect yourself properly.

True sun safety needs to be a consistent, daily habit. We recommend a multipronged approach.

  1. Use Broad Spectrum SPF every day
Choose a sunscreen labeled "Broad Spectrum," which ensures protection against both UVA and UVB rays. We recommend Proper Sunscreen
  2. Reapply
Reapply every two hours when outdoors, or immediately after swimming or heavy sweating. Keep SPF in your bag and develop the habit.
  3. Seek shade
Limit direct sun exposure, especially during peak hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Walk on the shady side of the street!
  4. Wear protective gear
Use wide-brimmed hats and UV-blocking sunglasses to shield vulnerable areas like your eyes and scalp. UPF clothing and sleeves can also be helpful in covering up.
